Making wooden gates with your own hands. Do-it-yourself wooden gate and gate: photo and assembly Do-it-yourself swing gate made of wood

Is it possible to make a wooden gate with your own hands, if you have no experience with wood at all? In fact, the basic design of any gate is clear and simple - we will tell you all the key points and simple tricks in this interesting matter.

To begin with, we use a minimum of materials and keep the gate as simple as possible. In this basic version, they can already be used in the country. But it is assumed that in general, you will increase the finish of the gate, and thus create a more interesting appearance.

Well, let's get started!

How to make a wooden gate with your own hands. Basic design.

For each sash, we need two blanks with an end cut at an angle.

We will also need a timber of the same size with straight spikes at both ends. In the above blanks, we will later make grooves.

How to make a spike

The connection with a straight spike and groove significantly increases the rigidity and strength of the structure. It also allows you to increase the bonding area, which also has a positive effect on the strength of the product. It is not difficult to make this connection, but accuracy is needed. Mark the workpiece with a pencil and make cuts at a distance of 5-6 mm from each other.

Then remove the excess wood with a chisel.

Repeat this procedure on the other side and the spike is ready.

How to cut a groove

Again, the main thing here is accuracy, so start with markup. Then drill a groove.

If you do not have a machine, then the same work can be done with a drill bit and a conventional drill.

Remove excess wood with a chisel, and check that the groove is the same depth along the entire length. If necessary, trim its depth with a chisel. We need three such grooves on each of the two blanks.

The upper crossbar for the sash will be the blank on which we made the spikes. The other two crossbars are ordinary boards inserted into the grooves. But we also need to make sure the sash is rigid so that it doesn't warp under its own weight, so we'll add a diagonal. But for it you need to make a cut on our workpiece with spikes. For this, we assembled the sash - to mark the workpiece.

Now the work on the blanks is fully completed, and we can finally assemble the sash.

All connections should be glued and fastened with screws.

And the joints in the groove can be further tightened with bolts.

Drill through holes so that they go through the tenon. This will give the gate even more strength and extend its life.

Repeat the whole process from the very beginning for the second sash, and all the hard work in this project will be over!

We also sawed off the sharp ends of our vertical supports a bit, for purely aesthetic reasons.

How to install swing wooden gates with your own hands.

Since we already have concrete posts installed, we settled on these hinges - it is convenient to attach them to any surface.

It remains to make a constipation for the gate from a metal plate.

That's it, our gates are ready.

So, we got acquainted with the basic design of the gate.

Wooden gates - design options.

Knowing how to work with the simplest design, we can make almost any other type of wooden gate with minimal additions.

A simple sheathing with a chain-link mesh will make the gate as practical and cheap as possible at the same time. This is a great option when you need to fence a large area.

The arrangement of a reliable garage ensures not only the safety of the car, but also prevents intruders from entering the vehicle. Each car owner strives to have his own garage, since in big cities many cars spend the night in the open, being exposed to the harmful effects of the environment and being the object of increased attention from scammers. For the owners of country houses and summer cottages, the task of erecting the named building is one of the first lines in the list of priority events. But the excessively high cost of manufacturing this design in some cases discourages any desire to implement the plan. Significantly reduce the cost of building a garage will allow the use of wood and the manufacture of some structural elements with your own hands. Gates are an integral part of any building of this type. For their high-quality construction, it is necessary to familiarize yourself with how to make wooden gates on your own without involving the labor of specialists.

The main advantages of this material are:

  • Availability and reasonable price. You can easily buy wood products of the required grade and required dimensions at a hardware store or a specialized company. The price policy in comparison with metal is much lower.
  • Ease of processing and installation. Without much difficulty, anyone can do the preparation of the named material with their own hands. Whereas the processing of metal products will require the use of expensive equipment: an angle grinder, welding equipment, etc.
  • Durability and reliability. With planned regular maintenance, a wooden entrance structure can last a long time. Compared to metal, the wooden surface is not subject to rust, but requires periodic treatment with special compounds. If one of the sides of the canvas is damaged, it is really possible to replace old boards with new ones in a matter of hours.

Depending on the tastes and preferences of each owner, any type of gate can be made: a sliding type or a variant with a lifting device.

The most simple and versatile type are swing gates. The manufacturing technology of this element is intuitive and does not require special building skills from the master.

The main task is to take into account all the subtleties and important features, as well as to carry out high-quality measurements and wood processing.

Before preparing the required material and tools, you should draw up a diagram of the future design and accurately calculate its location. Having finished with these points, it is worth starting to measure the entrance opening. To increase the visibility, it would be useful to use the existing sketch and adjust all the values to your option.

Drawing up a detailed sketch will allow you to better navigate the number of consumables and components. The construction of the structure involves the use and preparation of the following tools and materials:

  • timber or metal profile 50 × 50 mm;
  • wooden boards having a width of 100 mm and a thickness of 25 mm;
  • metal hanging loops;
  • hacksaw;
  • roulette;
  • Bulgarian;
  • building level;
  • steel corners;
  • drill with a set of drills and bits;
  • chisel;
  • sandpaper;
  • primer;
  • processing compounds;
  • set of brushes.

In the manufacture of wooden garage doors, special supports must be prepared in advance. If they are not ready yet, then two wooden beams or logs will be required for their manufacture.

We prepare holes for them with a depth of at least 1.2–1.5 m. When erecting any supporting structure, a simple rule applies: the deeper the pillars are located, the more stable and reliable the gate will be. We cut the blanks to the required height, taking into account the part of the support that will be in the ground. To increase the strength, it would be useful to further strengthen the foundation of future support pillars by filling the bottom of the recesses with a small amount of crushed stone of the 5 × 20 fraction and ramming the resulting substrate.

To prevent premature destruction of wooden supports, it is necessary to treat places that will be underground with a special water-repellent mastic or resin.

Next, we install the pillars, fix the vertical position according to the building level and fill the recesses with a concrete or cement mixture. In addition, to give greater practicality and aesthetics, concreted places can be overlaid with large stones or bricks.

Having completed all the preparatory procedures, we proceed to the manufacture of the structure itself.

In accordance with the dimensions of the entrance opening, we cut the wooden beam to the required values \u200b\u200band lay it out on a flat place so that we get a rectangle or square, depending on the type of gate.

We check the horizontality and verticality of the laid out beams, after which we drill holes in the corner joints and fasten the structure with self-tapping screws or dowels. It would be useful to reinforce the corners and the center of the frame with steel corners and cross beams, respectively. The ends of the last products are cut at an angle of 45º, placed crosswise and fixed with self-tapping screws.

Metal profile pipes can also be used as the basis for the future frame, however, welding equipment will be required for manufacturing.

The next event is the manufacture and surface treatment of cladding elements. Depending on the chosen material and the size of the doors, we cut the required number of boards. As a rule, pine is used for sheathing, since wooden products made from it have a small specific gravity and are most protected from the harmful effects of environmental factors.

The cladding board is placed close to each other and fixed with self-tapping screws to the frame. Upon completion, all irregularities are trimmed and processed with a grinder or fine sandpaper.

To increase the density of fit to the frame and maintain the temperature regime in the garage, the edges of the wings can be sheathed with insulation.

Having prepared the gate leaves, we proceed to the installation of metal hinges. In the case of attachment to a frame structure, the hinged parts are welded directly onto the frame, and in the case of attachment to wooden bases, onto support posts. To determine the optimal location, it is necessary to retreat from the upper and lower boundaries of the support a distance equal to ¼ of the total height of the pillars and mark the place. Then fix the hinges on the poles and hang the sashes.

The gate is almost ready, it remains only to prime and cover the surface with antiseptics. Having given the necessary time for drying, we proceed to the placement of accessories: handles, locks and bolts. To give a noble look, the gate can later be decorated with various forged elements.

They can be in the form of L-shaped metal rods located on the wings. For their operation, it is necessary to place two small pieces of pipe with a diameter ensuring the free movement of the rod in the intended places of entry into the ground, and also to make a platform on each leaf for fixing the handle of the fastener in the raised state.

The procedure for erecting a wooden gate with your own hands is a simple event and accessible to the implementation of each person. As with any construction work, in order to achieve all the goals, it is necessary to strictly follow the advice of specialists, take accurate measurements and use high-quality material. The implementation of all these points, together with planned periodic maintenance, will ensure the reliable functioning of the entrance gate for many years.

Scheme

The scheme will help you in designing your own wooden gate:

Owners of cottages often face the need to repair fences. Many opt for wooden gates: it is quite simple to make them with your own hands, while the cost of construction will not require serious investments. The gate is the element that fully shows the wealth and good taste of the owner, so their construction must be approached seriously and responsibly.

The use of inexpensive material, like wood, is perfect for creating swing gates that will be a harmonious addition to the entire fence.

Features and types of wooden gates

In order to make a wooden gate, it is necessary to solve 3 main tasks:

  1. Prepare the instrument. Unlike the manufacture of metal fences, wood does not require the purchase of special equipment, so construction can be done using ordinary hand tools that are in the arsenal of every owner.
  2. Select material. Wood is a very capricious material that requires proper processing and care. The service life of the gate depends entirely on the quality of the material. The wood of oak and cedar has the highest strength: it must be chosen for work.
  3. Select the type of construction. Today, there are several types of gates that are structurally different from each other. The most common elements are: hinged, retractable, from a picket fence, with a continuous coating.

Figure 1. Drawing of a wooden gate.

Depending on their skills, capabilities and desires, the master can choose any of these types of gates. In this case, it is necessary to take into account their features:

  1. Swing products with a gate are easy to manufacture and at the same time have an aesthetically attractive appearance. This is the best option for the owner who wants to build a fence with his own hands. As a rule, the width of the gate is 100 cm, and the width of the gate depends entirely on the specific needs. For example, if the owners use a car, the size of the wings must be set to about 2.5 m. If there is a larger car, the size increases to 3.5 m.
  2. Sliding gates are much more convenient to use than all other types, but only a person with professional skills can make them on their own. In addition, the construction will require spending additional funds to purchase an expensive automatic mechanism, which is based on bearing rollers.

Both swing and sliding gates, depending on the type of wood laying, can be:

  1. Solid. In the manufacture of wooden panels or boards are stacked on the frame close to each other. This method is ideal for masking the territory from prying eyes. Often, a metal frame or decorative forging is used to strengthen the element. Solid carved gates can decorate not only cottages, but also vast country lands.
  2. From a fence. Boards can be located at different distances from each other, while great importance is attached to the uniformity of their fastening. This type of gate is most often used in the design of summer cottages, as it allows you to place landings directly next to the fence, which does not obscure them, and fits well into the landscape design of the local area.

Preparation for construction

For construction in a summer cottage, it is better to use the simplest option - a swing gate made of a picket fence with a small gate.

Figure 2. Scheme of the framework construction principle.

As a rule, the question of arranging the gate appears as soon as the fence is ready. First of all, it is necessary to measure the distance between the last boards of the finished fence.

Experts recommend focusing on the drawings during work. They can be made independently or use the already presented scheme (Fig. 1). If the measurement results differ slightly from those indicated in the drawings, you can substitute the desired indicators.

After making the circuit, you should take care of acquiring the necessary materials and preparing tools. For the construction of swing gates you will need:

  • yardstick;
  • building level;
  • jigsaw or hacksaw;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • screwdriver or screwdriver;
  • plane;
  • sandpaper;
  • shovel;
  • crushed stone;
  • cement-sand mixture;
  • metal pipes, wooden beams or logs with a diameter of 10 cm;
  • boards with a thickness of at least 2.5 cm and a height of about 2 m;
  • wooden beams with a section of 5x5 cm;
  • door hinges;
  • oil paint for wood or varnish;
  • brush.

If you are the owner of a country house with a plot, you cannot do without a garage for a car. An important part of the garage is the gate. They should be not only strong, but also pleasing to the eye and fit into the overall style of the house and garage. The simplest option is swinging wooden garage doors. They can be made by hand. Wooden gates are beautiful and quite reliable.

Wood - pros and cons

Wood as a material has its advantages and disadvantages.

  • Wood is an environmentally friendly material.
  • It passes air and steam well, it will not be damp in the garage.
  • It looks aesthetically pleasing, such a gate is ideal for a wooden house.
  • Easily processed.

However, it has its downsides.

  • It is susceptible to decay, can be affected by various insects, fungus.
  • Lit.
  • Over time, a wooden structure can shrink or swell.

Wooden gates, according to experts, serve from 5 to 7 years. You can also make metal gates with wooden decorative trim.

What to make a gate

The frame, or box, of the gate is usually made of timber 90 * 50 or 100 * 50 mm. The frame is made of thinner timber, 50 * 50 mm. For sheathing, boards with a thickness of 25 mm and a width of 10-20 cm are used.

Also, metal sheets can be fixed on the outside of the gate for beauty or to protect against burglary. The frame of the gate can also be made from a metal profile or a profile pipe, then the frame is also made of metal.

Drawings and calculations

To draw a drawing of a wooden gate, first of all, you need to accurately measure the opening - its height and width.

The drawings of the frame of a wooden garage door may look like the one in the picture. You can make it both on paper and in a computer program.

When drawing up a drawing, keep the following in mind.

  • Learn that the support posts and the vertical jumper between them are inside the opening.
  • There should be about 1 cm between the leaves and the uprights. This distance is necessary so that the gate can open and close freely, even if it swells from moisture in wet weather. The same distance must be left between the two wings.
  • The frame must necessarily include diagonal beams. They will protect against distortions, because, as you know, a triangle is the most rigid figure.
  • The sheathing can protrude beyond the edges of the frame by 10-30 cm, but this is not necessary - this moment depends on your preferences.
  • When drawing up a drawing, it is important to accurately observe all dimensions; it will be more difficult to correct errors later.

Gate design

The gate design includes a frame, a framework and a covering. The entire weight of the sashes should not fall only on the side parts of the opening: they can collapse. A frame and support posts are used to distribute the load. The box is rigidly fastened to the walls of the opening.

Support pillars are made of metal pipes or oak beams with a thickness of at least 15 cm. They are dug into the ground, and the depth of the pits should be at least 1 m, and the width should be 15 cm more than the thickness of the pillar. A small layer of rubble is poured at the bottom of the pits and tamped down. Before installation, wooden poles are coated with bituminous mastic or resin to protect them from decay. After installation, the pit is covered with rubble or poured with cement mortar, the second option is better.

The doors are hung on metal hinges. It is better to buy swept hinges, they can withstand a large load.

To make the frame of a wooden gate to the garage with your own hands, the bars are sawn into pieces of the required length in accordance with the drawing and processed with a planer. Diagonal parts are cut at the right angle. If the diagonal beams are planned to be fixed crosswise, one of them must be cut into two parts.

The frame diagram may look like in the figure. There are several ways to fasten the frame parts.

  • The easiest way is to fasten the parts of the frame with self-tapping screws and corners.
  • You can drill blind holes in the parts and insert dowels lubricated with epoxy glue into them.
  • If you have experience in carpentry, you can collect them into a hidden spike. To do this, cut out ¼ of the thickness of the bar, make a spike of a suitable size on the other part and connect it. Such a connection is more reliable and reduces the deformation of the structure in the future.

Important! It is necessary to assemble wooden gates with your own hands on a flat surface in order to avoid distortions. In the process, control the correct assembly by measuring the diagonals.

The outer side of the assembled frame is painted with paint, preferably pentaphthalic (PF), which has good water-repellent properties and is quite adhesive. Plywood is laid on the frame and fixed with screws until the paint is dry. Thus, the plywood sheet will immediately be glued to the frame.

The sash blank is turned over, painted on the inside, and insulation is immediately placed between the frame bars. The paint will immediately stick it. Next, paint the frame itself and also attach a sheet of plywood or hardboard. It is better to choose hardboard if the gate is planned to be covered on top with another material, for example, metal. On the outside of the sash, you can attach a lining or other decorative material.

You can make a furniture shield from the boards. To do this, the side surfaces of the boards are lubricated with PVA glue and tightly adjusted to each other using clamps and a mallet. You can also make spikes and grooves in the boards. Such a connection will allow you to get garage doors made of wood without gaps, therefore, there will be no drafts in the garage.

When the sashes are ready, they are installed on the hinges. This requires two people, as the gate is quite heavy. The frame must be well aligned so that the gate does not swing open on its own, and it can be opened and closed without much effort.

If the support poles are metal, then the hinges are welded to them, if they are wooden, then they are bolted. The bolts must then be sunk into the wood and putty on top so that they cannot be unscrewed. This way you will protect your garage from burglars to some extent. Finished gates are treated with a protective primer, and covered with stain or paint on top. You can decorate wooden garage doors with your own hands with forged parts.

If the gate frame is made of metal, a profile pipe or a metal profile is used. They are connected by welding, for this the frame elements are also laid out on a flat surface.

The welds on the finished frame are ground with a grinder so that the skin fits snugly against it. Next, the frame is placed inside the gate frame, placing them on a flat surface. It is necessary to arrange them in such a way that there is a gap of 1 cm between the leaves and between the leaves and the frame. After that, hinges are welded to the frame of the leaves and the frame. To ensure that nothing moves during the welding process, liners are used.

The wood sheathing is attached to the metal frame by drilling holes in the latter in the right places. Boards are bolted to the frame. After that, the sashes are processed in the same way as in the case of a wooden frame.

Locks and bolts

Important details of the gate are locks and bolts. These can be vertical locks, for which it is necessary to make holes in the floor, a revolving bolt, a barrier bolt or sliding. Such constipation can also be made independently. Depending on how it is supposed to enter the garage, the bolt is made from the outside or from the inside. A padlock can be additionally hung on the bolt of the "revolving" or "barrier" type.

A simple sliding curtain is made from a metal plate and brackets that are bolted to the gate. Latches can also be made with your own hands from a metal tube and a T-shaped rod.

You can also install a mortise lock on the gate. For reliability, both mortise and padlocks must be installed, but for this there must be another door or gate to the garage.

Overhead gate

You can make lifting and turning garage. This is more difficult, since the correct installation of the mechanism is required, but such gates are automated.

  • For a lifting and turning structure, the box is made of a metal channel, since such gates are quite heavy. The box is installed in the opening.
  • After measurements, the frame is welded and sheathed with boards or plywood.
  • Next, make a support for the mechanism. Holes are drilled in the shelves, longitudinal racks are fixed in one of them, and spring mechanism fasteners are fixed in the other.
  • The hinge assembly is made from a corner.
  • Skids are made along which the canvas will move. They are attached with anchors to the walls.
  • After the mechanism is installed, all metal parts are painted so that they do not corrode due to external influences.

Up-and-over doors can also be insulated.

Conclusion

Do-it-yourself wooden gates for a garage in a suburban area. To do this, it is important to make measurements correctly, and follow the technology when assembling the structure.
