Akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos, in front of Her icon called “Pochaevskaya. Orthodox Akathist to the Pochaev Icon of the Mother of God Akathist to the Pochaev Icon of the Mother of God

The Orthodox world considers the icon of the Pochaev Mother of God to be a real shrine, so the significance of this image for Orthodox believers is difficult to underestimate. The image is kept in the Ukrainian city of Pochaev in the monastery of monks. It was received in the 16th century, and from that time the holy face became known among believers as miraculous.

Miracles icons

The icon of Our Lady of Pochaev is known among people for its miracles. This is one of the few miraculous icons that have been preserved in the bosom of the church. The image is painted with oil paints on a linden board. It was originally decorated with a silver stripe, but over time it was lost and replaced with a pearl robe. The setting resembles a star, whose rays are rich in stones. There is evidence of miracles that occurred thanks to the icon, here are just a few of them:

  • sinners repented and came to God;
  • captives were miraculously released;
  • the sick received healing even from incurable diseases;
  • homeless people found a home.

One of the most famous miracles is the salvation of the monastery from the Turkish army. This happened in 1975, when the Turkish army burned the city, took all the young people captive and destroyed all the Orthodox shrines. People did not believe in salvation, because the threat was serious. The monks sang an akathist to the Pochaev Icon of the Mother of God day and night, asking for protection and salvation. When the Turks began to besiege the monastery, the Mother of God herself appeared before their eyes. She rose above the monastery along with a host of saints and silently looked at the Turks. Even the most desperate warriors were horrified by this picture and the army hastily left the holy place.

Since then, people have come to ask for protection and protection from the Pochaev Icon of the Mother of God. The Mother of God often grants miracles through the prayers of believers at the images.

Every year thousands of pilgrims come to the Lavra to perform a prayer service and defend the service. The celebration takes place in spring (03.31), summer (07.23) and autumn (09.08).

Prayers to the Mother of God

First prayer

Oh, All-Merciful Lady, Queen and Lady, chosen from all generations, and blessed by all generations, heavenly and earthly! Look mercifully at this people standing before Thy holy icon and fervently praying to You, and make Your intercession and intercession with Thy Son and our God, so that no one will come from here empty-handed and put to shame in his hope, but may everyone receive everything from You, according to the good will of your heart and according to your need and desire, for the salvation of the soul and the health of the body. Look with mercy, O All-Sung Theotokos, and upon this monastery, which bears Your name, You have loved it since ancient times, having chosen it as your property, and endlessly flowing currents of healing from Your miraculous icon and from the ever-flowing source, in the footprint of Your foot, revealed to us, and preserve it from every excuse and slander of the enemy, as in ancient times you preserved it, by Your appearance, intact and undamaged from the fierce invasion of the Hagarians, so that the Most Holy Name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, and Your glorious Dormition, will be sung and glorified in it forever and ever. Amen.

Second prayer

Our Most Blessed Queen, Most Blessed Lady, Our Mother of God of Hope! We now flow to You with tenderness, and with a contrite soul and a humble heart we pray to You, the All-Singing One, before Your Most Pure Image: remember Your ancient generosity, even from You that was here, and how sometimes You appeared on the rock of Chayev, in a pillar of fire, from the stone, healing water flowing forth, appear before us now, O Mother of many powers, and with the warmth of the Mother of God, Thy love, warm our stony hearts, tears of love and unrepentant repentance flowing from our eyes. For You are our only God-given Intercessor: We pray to You, deliver from all troubles, from all adversity, illness and sorrow, Thy servants, through the intercession of Thy great intercessor and prayer book for us, our all-blessed father Job, Thy saint Pochaevsky, whose prayer I manifestly listened to Thou art sometimes in the air, when by Thy all-glorious and terrible appearance Thou hast delivered Thy monastery from the invasion and taxation of the Hagarians. Look with mercy, O All-Singing One, with the charity of Thy merciful intercession, pour out Thy rich mercies upon all our kingdom and country, and upon all the people: gather together those who are scattered, and guide the unfaithful and other faiths in our countries on the true path, having fallen away from the pious faith of our fathers. return and associate them with the Holy Saints of Your Orthodox and Catholic Church; Establish peace in our families, support old age, mentor the young, raise babies, stand up for the orphans and widows, heal the captives of freedom, heal the sick, remember those who live in judgment and in prison, and in captivity, and in the bitter labors, protect us from death, visit and comfort currents of miracles and signs of many different kinds, which You continually pour out to everyone from Your holy, celibate icon. Grant, O All-Blessed One, the fertility of the earth, the goodness of the air, and all the gifts that are timely and beneficial for our benefit, through the prayers of Your chosen saints, Your gracious face on the holy icon of Your surroundings: Elijah the God-speaking, the holy Archdeacon Stephen the First-Suffering, the Venerable Abraham the All-Blessed, and the God-Music Mina a martyr of many names, and with them a number of saints and righteous wives: the most praised Paraskeva, the blessed Irene and the long-suffering Saint Catherine the Great, and all the saints. When our departure from this life and resettlement to eternity is ripe, appear before us, O Most Blessed One, just as You sometimes brought Your monastery to safety for salvation during the Battle of Zbarazh, and by Your warm intercession grant us the Christian death of our life, painless, shameless, peaceful and the Holy Mysteries involved; so that in this life, now and in the future, we will all be worthy, through Your prayers, of endless heavenly life in the Kingdom of Your beloved Son, the Lord God and our Savior, Jesus Christ, to Him belongs all glory, honor and worship, forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer three

Oh, Most Holy Virgin, Lady Theotokos! I thank You with all my heart, for You have vouchsafed me, Your sinful and unworthy servant, to appear here and worship on Your holy mountain. Oh, how many blessings have I, such a great sinner, been rewarded with Your mercy. I see, O Most Pure One, and I am horrified and my spirit melts away, in vain with my own eyes this multi-healing source of Thy grace, which Thou hast ineffably revealed since ancient times in the footsteps of Thy holy foot, and we all reverently bow down in the place where Thy virginal nose stands, I pray to Thee, blessed Hope and Salvation souls and bodies of ours: wash me with Your wholesome water from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, quench with Your grace-filled streams all the passions of my heart, heal with drops from Your ever-flowing source all my bodily ailments, yes, instructed, healed and delivered by You, I sing to You with all diligence: Rejoice, source of unceasing joy, rejoice, source of unspeakable kindness. Rejoice, drowning of unclean lusts, Rejoice, washing away of all kinds of defilements. Rejoice, the most luminous stream for the health of the faithful from the mountain-shaded thicket, bestowing the grace of healing; Rejoice, heavenly dew, sending down currents of wisdom from above to those who thirst for true knowledge. Rejoice, praise of Pochaevskaya, save us who pray to You, our hope and consolation. Amen.

Prayer four

To You, O Mother of God, we, sinners, prayerfully flow to You, Your miracles in the Holy Lavra of Pochayev, revealed with humility and for our lamenting sins. We, Lady, we know, as it is not fitting for us sinners to ask anything, except for the Righteous Judge to leave our iniquities to us. All that we have endured in life, sorrows, needs, and illnesses, like the fruits of our falls, have languished for us, and I allow this to God for our correction. Moreover, the Lord brought all this truth and judgment to His sinful servants, who in their sorrows came to Your intercession, the Most Pure One, and in the tenderness of their hearts they cry out to You: our sins and iniquities, O Good One, do not remember, but rather raised Your all-honorable hand Stand before Your Son and God, so that the cruelty we have committed may be forgiven us, and for our many unfulfilled promises, He will not turn His face away from His servants, and He will not take His grace, which contributes to our salvation, from our souls. To her, Lady, be the Intercessor for our salvation and, not disdaining our cowardice, look upon our groans, even in our troubles and sorrows we lift up before Your miraculous image. Enlighten our minds with tender thoughts, strengthen our faith, confirm our hope, grant us the sweetest gift of love to accept us. By these gifts, Most Pure One, and not by illnesses and sorrows, may our belly be elevated to salvation, but protect our souls from despondency and despair, deliver us who are weak from the troubles and needs that come upon us, and human slander and unbearable diseases. Grant peace and prosperity to the Christian life through Your intercession, O Lady, establish the Orthodox faith in our country, throughout the world. Do not betray the Apostolic and Catholic Church to disparagement, preserve the statutes of the saints forever, unshakable, save all who come to You from the perishing ditch. Also, bring the heresy of our deceived brethren or the saving faith of those who have been destroyed by sinful passions to true faith and repentance, so that together with us those who worship Your miraculous image will confess Your intercession. Vouchsafe us, O Most Pure Lady Theotokos, even in this belly the victory of truth by Your intercession to behold, vouchsafe us grace-filled joy before the end of our perception, just as the inhabitants of ancient times were shown by Your appearance to the victors and enlighteners of the Hagarians, so that we all have a grateful heart, together with the angels, and prophets, and apostles, and with all the saints, glorifying Your mercy, let us give glory, honor and worship in the Trinity to the sung God the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen.

History of the image

The history of the face begins in Pochaev in the 16th century, when Metropolitan Neophytos rode past the city and was met by the Goysky nobles. The Metropolitan was touched by the care and warmth of the nobles, and as a memory of himself, he left them an image of the Mother of God. Since then, it has become a symbol of the city and its shrine. The Metropolitan soon became a patriarch, and the face of the Mother of God began to work miracles among people.

Initially, the Pochaev Icon was kept in the house of nobles (about 20-30 years) and only then it healed the sick person for the first time. After the miracle, the owner of the house, Anna Goyskaya, decided that her house was not worthy of such a shrine and she should not own it alone, and the shrine was transferred for safekeeping to the monastery, where every believer could bow to it and ask for a miracle. However, after the death of the pious Christian woman, her descendants decided to regain power and took the image back.

However, the image demanded a reverent attitude towards itself, which the new owners did not give it, and punishment came to their family - the wife of the owner of the estate became possessed and was freed only after the monk advised the image to be returned to the monastery.

Other miraculous icons of the Virgin Mary:

In 1721, the icon was transferred to Catholics, who occupied the monastery as a result of Poland's seizure of right-bank Ukraine. They realized the significance of the image and treated her with reverence. The image of the Mother of God was placed in a golden chasuble, which was decorated with small crowns. Only 100 years later, in 1821, the monastery returned to the Orthodox Church, and the icon became the property of believers. The monastery today has become a Lavra and is under the leadership of the Moscow Patriarchate.

Important! Every week on Saturday an akathist is read to the Pochaev Icon of the Mother of God.

Pochaev Lavra

In the church of the same name, the Pochaev Icon is placed above the royal doors, and after midnight prayer and the singing of troparions it is lowered to a height accessible to parishioners. The image is placed on silk ribbons, and a monk is always next to her. Everyone who comes to the service approaches the face of the Mother of God, keeping a queue and in silence.

The temple in Pochaev has been the center of the Orthodox Church in Western Ukraine for several centuries. In addition to the holy image, the temple is famous for other miraculous phenomena. Each parishioner can ask the monks for life-giving water from a source that was opened thanks to the Mother of God. The water is distributed by the novice, who collects it from a spring outside the monastery fence. At this holy place, lamps burn around the clock. The relics of Saint Job, the famous prayer book, who died here as a 100-year-old man, are also kept on the territory of the temple.

About other holy places of Orthodox Ukraine:

Services were performed in the church constantly and did not stop either during the First World War or during the Great Patriotic War. The monastery was still operating and even the German Gestapo could not close the monastery. Even during the Soviet oppression of the church, prayer to the Pochaev Icon of the Mother of God sounded within these walls, services did not stop. The monks asked the Pochaev Mother of God for protection, and she did not leave them.

Prayers to the Most Holy Theotokos in front of Her icon, called “Pochaevskaya”

Amen.

Prayer

To You, O Mother of God, we, sinners, flow in prayer, Your miracles revealed in the Holy Lavra of Pochaev, humming and lamenting our sins. Moreover, the Lord brought all this truth and judgment to His sinful servants, who in their sorrows came to Your intercession, the Most Pure One, and in the tenderness of their hearts they cry out to You: Our sins and iniquities, O Good One, do not remember, but even more so, Thy all-honorable hand having risen up, stand before Your Son and God, so that the evil we have done may be forgiven us, and for our many unfulfilled promises, He will not turn His face away from His servants, and may not take His grace, which contributes to our salvation, from our souls. By these gifts, Most Pure One, and not by illnesses and sorrows, may our belly be elevated to salvation, but by protecting our souls from despondency and despair, deliver us, the weak, from the troubles and needs that come upon us, and human slander, and unbearable diseases. Grant peace and prosperity to the Christian life through Your intercession, O Lady, establish the Orthodox faith in our country and throughout the world. Do not betray the Apostolic and Catholic Church to disparagement, preserve the statutes of the saints forever, unshakable, save all who come to You from the perishing ditch. Also, bring the heresy of our deceived brethren or the saving faith in sinful passions who destroyed them again to true faith and repentance, and together with us, who worship Your miraculous image, they will confess Your intercession. Vouchsafe us, O Most Pure Lady Theotokos, even in this belly the victory of truth by Your intercession to behold, vouchsafe us grace-filled joy before the end of our perception, just as the inhabitants of ancient times were shown by Your appearance as the victors and enlighteners of the Hagarians, so that we may all have a grateful heart together with the Angels, and prophets, and apostles, and with all the saints, glorifying Your mercy, let us give glory, honor and worship in the Trinity to the sung God, Father and Son and Holy Spirit, forever and ever. Amen.

Pochaev Icon of Godto her Mother

The history of this miraculous icon is inextricably linked with the Pochaev Monastery in honor of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is located in Western Ukraine (now within the Ternopil region). Founded in the middle of the 13th century, the Pochaev Monastery remained a small monastery until the 16th century. The heyday of the monastery dates back to the end of the 16th - beginning of the 17th century, when the monastery received a miraculous icon of the Most Holy Theotokos as a gift from the owner of the estate A.E. Goyskaya (in 1597), and the Monk Job of Pochaevsky became the head of the monastery.

The miraculous image of the Blessed Virgin Mary, called the Pochaev Icon, was received as a gift from the Greek Metropolitan Neophytos, who in 1559 passed through the estate of Goyskaya Orlya (near Pochaev) to Moscow. This icon stood in the castle chapel for about 30 years, until it was noticed that an extraordinary light was emanating from the icon. After A.E. Goyskaya’s brother Philip Kozinsky, who was blind from birth, received a miraculous healing from the icon, the pious resident gave the shrine to the monks of the Pochaev monastery. The miraculous icon with the procession was transferred to the Pochaev Monastery.

On the small icon, the Mother of God is depicted with the Eternal Child on her right hand. In her left hand She holds the cloth with which the Infant Jesus is covered. The Lord put his left hand on the shoulder of His Most Pure Mother, and raised his right hand for blessing; The Mother of God bowed Her face to the head of the Son. On the marks of the icon there are seven miniature images of saints: the prophet Elijah, the martyr Mina, the first martyr Stephen, the Monk Abraham, the great martyr Catherine, the martyr Paraskeva and the martyr Irina. The Slavic writing on the icon indicates that “the image of Pochaev was painted by a Russian hand.” “The Book of Records of the Miracles of Pochaev” reports many healings through prayers to the Most Holy Theotokos, revealed through Her Pochaev Icon.

For four centuries, the Queen of Heaven has been showing Her all-powerful help to the Pochaev monastery. Thus, in the summer of 1675, Turkish troops led by Khan Nurredin besieged the Pochaev Lavra from three sides. The weak monastery fence was not a serious obstacle for the Turkish army. The besieged monks and laymen hiding in the monastery awaited the start of the assault in fear. Hegumen of the monastery Joseph (Dobromirsky) called on the Orthodox to turn for help to heavenly intercessors - the Most Holy Theotokos and St. Job of Pochaev. All night the besieged prayed fervently in front of the miraculous Pochaev Icon and at the tomb with the relics of St. Job. On the morning of July 23, when the sun rose, they began to sing an akathist to the Mother of God. When they sang “To the Chosen Voivode,” a wondrous miracle occurred: the Most Holy Theotokos Herself appeared above the monastery temple with numerous Angels holding drawn swords. The Monk Job was next to the Mother of God and prayed to Her for the protection of the monastery. The Turks, seeing the Heavenly Host, mistook it for a ghost and began to shoot arrows at the Queen of Heaven and the Angels. But the arrows returned and struck those who directed them. There was confusion in the Turkish army, the distraught warriors killed each other, and then took a panicked flight. The defenders of the monastery, taking advantage of the enemy’s panic, captured many. Some of the prisoners accepted holy Baptism and remained forever in the Pochaev Dormition Lavra. In memory of the miraculous deliverance of the monastery from enemies, on July 23 (August 5, new style), an annual celebration was established in honor of the Pochaev Icon of the Mother of God - Intercessor and Helper in all sorrow and sorrow.

By God's permission, from 1721 to 1831 the Pochaev Monastery was in the hands of the Uniates. During this period, on September 8, 1733, by order of Pope Clement XIV (1769-1774), the so-called coronation of the Pochaev Icon was carried out, which in the practice of the Roman Catholic Church means the formal canonical recognition of this icon as truly miraculous. From 1721 to 1831, 539 miraculous healings from the Pochaev Icon were witnessed. In 1831, the Pochaev Monastery returned to the fold of the Orthodox Church. The Mother of God continued through Her Pochaev Icon to provide innumerable benefits to Christian believers who came to Her prayerful intercession. The healing of a blind nine-year-old girl, Anna Akimchukova, in 1832 is especially famous.

In 1859, Emperor Alexander II, who visited the Pochaev Monastery, donated a new iconostasis for the cathedral Dormition Church. In this iconostasis, to this day, in the 3rd tier, there is a miraculous icon of the Mother of God, in a star-shaped silver icon case above the Royal Doors. Every morning after the Midnight Office, when the troparion “The Impenetrable Gate” is chanted, the miraculous icon slowly descends on special ribbons and stops at the level of human height. Believers approach and reverently worship the icon. The icon is also lowered on Saturdays, after the cathedral singing of the akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos, as well as on Sundays and holidays, after the late Liturgy. And to this day the grace-filled power exuding from this glorified pan-Christian shrine has not diminished.

The revered copy of the Pochaev Icon of the Mother of God resides in the Holy Spirit Cathedral in the city of Kherson. The icon sailed along the Dnieper and for many years was the cell icon of the nun of the Assumption Aleshkovo Monastery, nun Eutropia (Isaenkova), canonized as a locally venerated saint of the Kherson diocese on August 9, 2011.

By blessing

The Pochaev Icon of the Mother of God is the greatest Orthodox and Catholic Shrine, which is revered by all Orthodox believers and clergy, as well as Catholics. Hymns of praise have been composed in her honor, including the Orthodox akathist to the Pochaev Mother of God. This icon is rightfully considered miraculous because it was blessed by the Virgin Mary herself and is located in the place where the Mother of God appeared to two monks. The icon was brought to Constantinople by Metropolitan Neophytos and given to the noblewoman Anna Goiskaya. It was soon noticed that, and soon from the grace that she exuded, the brother of the noblewoman Anna Philip was healed. In this regard, Anna gave the icon to the monks, who, after the miraculous appearance of the Mother of God, settled on Pochaevskaya Mountain. Thus, the Christian world found two shrines that still attract pilgrims from all over the world - the Pochaev Icon and the Pochaev Monastery.

How does the akathist help the Pochaev Icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary?

They pray to the Pochaev Icon of the Mother of God for protection from enemy attack, as well as for the preservation of the faith and the church. She is endowed with grace by which she can heal blindness, both physical and spiritual. People who have long-standing and incurable diseases should read the Russian Orthodox akathist to the Pochaev Icon of the Mother of God. She is the patroness of all those who are innocent but imprisoned. They pray to her for the speedy release of the prisoners.

How to read the akathist before the holy icon of the Pochaev Mother of God

Akathist is a genre in church choral singing of the Orthodox Church. It belongs to cell prayers, which means it is read mainly at home independently. This genre is not included in church liturgical days. According to the charter, only the “Great Akathist” is to be read once a year, which was written in honor of the Mother of God and became the basis of the genre that is now called the Akathist. The akathist to the Pochaev Mother of God is endowed with miraculous power and great grace will come if you read it on Pochaev Mountain at the foot print, which. Of course, if there is no opportunity to go on a pilgrimage, you can read the akathist to the Pochaev Icon of the Mother of God at home. It is advisable to read the akathist in the morning, when thoughts are still fresh and not burdened with everyday worries. A special blessing from the priest for reading this akathist is not necessary, but if your soul requires it, you can ask for it.

Prayers to the Most Holy Theotokos in front of Her icon, called “Pochaevskaya”

Amen.

Troparion to the Most Holy Theotokos in front of Her icon, called “Pochaevskaya”

Troparion, tone 5

Before Your holy icon, Lady, those who pray are honored with healing, accept the knowledge of true faith and repel the Hagarian invasions. Likewise, for us who fall before You, ask for remission of sins, enlighten the thoughts of piety in our hearts, and offer up a prayer to Your Son for the salvation of our souls.

Greatness

We magnify Thee, Most Holy Virgin, and venerate Thy venerable icon, which Thou hast glorified since ancient times on Mount Pochaev.
